About Me

Leadership Experiences

Leadership Experiences

  • My wife Julie and I started our family in Spencer. I started my 42-year electric utility career here in Spencer. Julie was an RN who worked in the ER at Spencer Hospital and then at the Fort Dodge Hospital.
  • We have two adult children and five grandchildren who live in Humboldt.
  • We lived in Spencer for 19 years before moving to Humboldt for a career change.
  • We moved back to Spencer over 5 years ago and opened Vermeer Glass Art. We always liked Spencer and missed our friends, our church, and being close to the Lakes (I enjoy fishing).
  • When we lived here the first 19 years, I was active and gave back to the community.  Check out my experiences list.

Why do I want to be on the City Council?

Flood Recovery

Everyone knows there will be a long process to rebuild from the flood, and there will be hard decisions to minimize impacts for future events.

Infrastructure

Every community deals with 50-year-old to over 100-year-old infrastructure. No one wants to pay for aging infrastructure; however, there is a point at which it needs to be addressed. However, I would like options to minimize the financial impacts on the taxpayers.

Growth

For Spencer to grow and expand, we need to create opportunities. Spencer is a hub community, and the two largest employers in town are the hospital and the school system. When we returned to Spencer after 23 years, not much had changed. No major new industry has found Spencer their home. To attract business and industry to Spencer, we need to demonstrate the ease of doing business, the overall cost (utility costs, property taxes), the availability of labor, logistics, other business support, and the overall appeal of Spencer. We need to continue working with local economic development groups to identify industries that attract people to work, live, and play here in Spencer.

Clean Up

When we came back to Spencer, what really stood out was the number of house apartments that are in horrible shape. Landlords need to be held accountable to maintain their buildings. There are so many properties that people park cars, trailers, junk, and other stuff in their front yards. When businesses visit our community, we need the community to present well. The community's rules apply to everyone, and everyone should be treated equally.

Compare Candidates

It’s time to compare the candidates’ leadership experiences. I’ve shared my list of experiences and proven leadership. Voters deserve to know my opponent’s leadership experiences. Then you can compare and decide who deserves to represent Ward 4.
